While many young hopefuls wishing to carve a legal niche for themselves never look beyond Melbourne, there are now plenty of exciting career opportunities in regional Victoria.
Only a three hour drive from Melbourne, lies Warrnambool - the headquarters of Maddens Lawyers, a significant regional firm always on the lookout for new recruits. The latest addition to its legal ranks is Lev Ramchen (formerly working for a national firm) bringing the number of lawyers to 14 among a staff of 50, while a star graduate is due to start next year.
Proud of its long country traditions, Maddens Lawyers specialises in personal injury, conveyancing, family and commercial law for clients over a 200 kilometre radius from what is the fifth largest city in Victoria.
"Despite the size of the city, we are still only five minutes from the office and it is a great opportunity to live by the ocean" general manager Norm Shaw said.
These days, law students can attend the Warrnambool campus of Deakin University and the city's regional location is no barrier to Maddens Lawyers conducting litigation for clients throughout Australia - particularly with modern technology that includes teleconferencing and webcams.
"One of the great incentives we offer is the opportunity to grow and develop within the law", Mr Shaw said. "Because we are a regional firm, opportunity is even greater for an interest in the practice."
